Jody, the son of Marion Cron of Nicholson Pennsylvania and Oliver Cron Sr. who predeceased his son, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on August 31, 1967 in Philadelphia. He arrived in Vietnam on February 10, 1968 where he was assigned to and served with Company G, 2d Battalion, 9th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of March the Battalion participated in Operation SCOTLAND II under the operational control of the 4th Marines in northern Quang Tri Province. From March 4, Company G occupied a defensive positon on Hill 37, 3 kilometers northeast of Camp Carroll on the high ground overlooking Route 9 in Cam Lo District.

On March 19, while in his defensive position, PFC Jody Cron was killed by fragmentation wounds from a hostile grenade thrown near his position.
