Ida Mae Scafe was the daughter of Joseph Scafe (1829 - 1902) and M. Malinda (Hicks) Scafe (1836 - 1903). She was a schoolteacher at Galesburg, MO before she married Charles Rufus Smith at Brest, Jasper County, MO on Christmas day, 1895. She was a merchant with her husband, and lived in Neck City 56 years. They had no children.

Her siblings were Martha, Mary, Alice, Nettie, Charles E., R. T., and Walter J.

The parents and five of the children are buried in Friends Cemetery at Purcell, MO.
