He served for the Union during the Civil War in the 127th Illinois Infantry. Alonzo and Martha were married in 1869 and Alonzo studied at the Cincinnati Medical College and became a physician in 1875.

His children were all born in Illinois include Griffin Jonathan (born in 1870), Miles David (in 1874), Virgil Aaron S. (in 1876), and Elzeda (in 1878) & Marcus Willard "Mark" (in 1880).

During the census of 1880, the family is living in Williamson County, Illinois. Alonzo was a physician. His wife died on 8/7/1885 in Williamson County. She was 35. Alonzo remarried almost immediately. His new wife was Elizabeth Day. A daughter Bernice was born in Illinois about 1886. At the time of the 1900 census another daughter is listed and they are still in Williamson county, Illinois.
