Hazel was born January 27, 1918 in rural Halstad, the eldest child of Theodore and Linda (Melberg) Hellerud. She was baptized into the Christian faith at Augustana Lutheran Church rural Halstad and confirmed at East Marsh River Lutheran Church, Halstad, MN. She graduated from Halstad High School in 1936. Hazel married Lloyd Carlson at her parent’s home on September 25, 1938. During their farming years in Anthony Township, Hazel was an active member of the East Marsh River Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid and the Anthony Hobbyists. After Lloyd’s untimely death in February of 1959, she moved to Halstad with her young children Michael and Karen. They became members of Halstad Lutheran Church where Hazel was active with Ladies Aid, Sunday school and the Quilters. In 1967 Hazel began work at the Halstad Telephone Company and was a loyal employee until her retirement in 1983.
Hazel’s garden, flowers, yard and home bore her signature, tirelessly working to keep them pristine. Most important to her was faith and family. She was a marvelous Mom, Grandma and Great Grandma.
She will be lovingly remembered by her son Michael (Robbie), daughter Karen (Gregory Rise), her sisters Esther Gredvig, Jean Eastvold, her sister-in-law Mary Hellerud, six grandchildren and seven great grandsons. Preceding her in death were her parents Ted and Linda Hellerud, her husband Lloyd and her dear brother John Hellerud.
