Crawford, John Bergeson "Jack"
Of Weston, MA, died peacefully on December 1, 2012 at age 92. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 66 years, Sarah Cushing Crawford; his two daughters, Nancy Crawford and husband Roger Sutcliffe of Exeter, NH, and Carol Crawford and husband Adam Woods of Bakersfield, VT; and son, Douglas Crawford and wife Susan Crawford of Wayland, MA. He is survived by five grandchildren, Caleb and Luke Woods, John and Lucy Crawford, and Elizabeth Crawford Sutcliffe; his sister, Mary Ellen Ames of South Natick; his nephews, Lawrence, Robert, and the late Mark Ames. Jack was born in Wollaston, MA, February 28, 1920, son of Dr. Lawrence and Ruby Dorothea "Dorothy" Bergeson Crawford. He graduated from Thayer Academy in 1937 and Middlebury College in 1941. He served in the United States Army with the 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division and received his battlefield commission to 2nd Lieutenant at St. Vith, Belgium in October of 1944. He was awarded three Bronze Battle Stars, the Silver Star medal, and a Purple Heart. He was also awarded the Knights Cross of the French Legion of Honor in 2007. Jack founded his own import company, Bandwagon, Inc. of Wilmington, MA, where he worked well into his eighties. He was a member of the Longwood Cricket Club, the Badminton & Tennis Club, The Country Club, the St. Moritz Tobogganing Club, and the Coral Beach Club. He was an avid sportsman and adventurer who trekked to the base camps of Annapurna and Everest in his 60's. An accomplished tennis player, Jack won the 1969 New England Senior Doubles and was a nationally ranked father and son player. He loved skiing and the Cresta Run in St. Moritz, where he became the oldest rider from the top at the age of 72. He was a fierce competitor with a huge spirit who lived a life full of courage and adventure. A memorial service will be held at the First Parish Church of Weston, 349 Boston Post Rd., Weston, MA on Friday, December 28, 2012 at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Mark Ames Wilderness Program at Red Top Treatment Center, P.O. Box 290, Wilson, WY 83014.
