Velma Louise Smith Horsley, born May 29, 1925, went to be with her Lord on December 2, 2013, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease. The funeral service will be held at Morgan Funeral Chapel today, Dec. 4, 2013, at 11 a.m. Bro. Terry Tibbs will officiate. Morgan Funeral Chapel & Crematory directing.
Interment will be in Rainbow Memorial Gardens. There will be no graveside service. Mrs. Horsley was born and raised in Steele, Ala. She was a graduate of Ashville High School Class of 1943. She was a homemaker and a longtime member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where she served as the pianist/organist for over 65 years. Her devotion to the church was such that she rarely missed a service and was always available when needed.
During her lifetime, she was involved with many school and community activities. She loved being with and dining with her friends at the Senior Center in Steele. Whether it was church events, senior trips, quilting or family get-togethers, you could always count on her to record the event as she loved taking pictures and was more than willing to share her copies.
Mrs. Horsley was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Roy D. Horsley Sr.; father, Joseph B. Smith; mother, Rosa M. Barron; sister, Jessie Lorene Smith; and stepfather, Stewart Barron.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Roy and Joan Horsley; sister, Patsy Galbreath; grandsons, Chip Horsley and Chad (Kate) Horsley; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Clyde and Betty Horsley; great-grandson, Zachary Horsley; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family respectfully requests no flowers. Memorials may be made to Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery Fund at the People's Bank in Steele.
Special thanks to the personnel at Attalla Health Care for the care and compassion they have shown during her stay over the last five years.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
