Christopher was a son of John S Berry and Alvira ALLEN Berry. Christopher's parents migrated from Cortland Co., New York to Springfield Twp., Bradford Co., Pennsylvania, circa 1837.

Christopher is enumerated as Farm Laborer in the 1860 household of Johnathan Rech at Columbia Twp., Bradford County. There is a C C Berry listed in the 1864 annual tax assessment records for South Creek Twp., Bradford Co., Pennsylvania. He owns 32 acres of unimproved land and a tax note states "soldier".

Christopher served with Union forces during the American Civil War. Aged 23 years, he enrolled as a substitute for man who had been drafted to serve; substitutes were typically awarded $300 at enrollment. Christopher enrolled in Company G, 49th Regiment of Pennsylvania Infantry. He was mustered in as private on 02 Dec 1863 at Troy, Bradford County. His military service records indicate he became ill in the spring of 1865 and was discharged by General Order on 08 July 1865, after war's end.

In the late 1860s Christopher migrated to Michigan.
