Army Sgt. Mennemeyer was assigned to the 82nd Medical Company (Air Ambulance), Fort Riley, Kansas. He was declared Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown Aug. 8 when his UH-60 Black Hawk crashed into a lake in the vicinity of Korean Village in Rutbah, Iraq - his remains were recovered Aug. 9. Steven was born in Frankfurt, Germany, and when he was about 2 years old, he would raise his hand to the sky to point at helicopters; he called them "hocker-dockers". He lived in Granite City from about age 8 and graduated from Granite City High School. He joined the Army Reserves in 1998 immediately after graduation and trained to be a medic. While in the Reserves, he spent five years as an EMT working for Abbott Ambulance in the St. Louis area. He entered active duty in 2002 and was serving his second tour in Iraq as a flight medic. Steven's passion for his job was what convinced him to sign up as an Army flight medic and to return to Iraq for a second time. He thought the men and women in battle needed good medics. He had plans to become a physician's assistant and needed only one more class. Steven loved to go fishing with his grandfather and spent a day at the lake with him his last visit home. He is survived by his seven-year-old son.
