Mrs. Catharine Farris died at her home in Bedford County, Tenn., March 22, 1891. She was a daughter of Rev. Joseph Smith and was born in Franklin County, Tenn., Sept. 8, 1822. She was converted very early in life, and became a member of the M. E. Church, South, in which she lived and enjoyed religion and faithful obedience to her Church vows till suddenly summoned to a home in glory. She was married to S.K. Farris Oct. 31, 1842. Eleven children blessed this union. Two of them preceeded her to heaven, having died in infancy. Nine of them still live and with bowed hands and broken hearts, mourn the loss of a good mother. She lived a long and beautiful life-a life of constant devotion to home, husband, children, neighbors, friends, the Church, to her Christian duty in all of its forms. She had a pleasant home and was prayerfully mindful of its comforts and excellent character. She loved the Church, supported it by word and act, and kept herself continually under its influence and protection. She seldom failed to fill her place in the congregation, unless some heavy pressure of the hand of Providence hindered. She was the preacher's constant friend. To him the doors of her home were always open, and a genuine Christian welcome greeted him whenever he chose to enter. A long life of training and interest taught her how to smoothe and brighten the pathway of the weary itinerant. Her father, Rev. Joseph Smith, was a preacher of the Tennessee Conference for more than twenty years, her brother, Rev. D. D. Smith, was an itinerant preacher in North Alabama for many years: and her son, Rev. J. T. Farris, is now a member of the Indian Mission Conference and an itinerant preacher in Oklahoma Territory. The bereaved husband and children, looking through the dark shadows of separation and death, know that the light of their once bright and cheerful home is gone out forever, since-the loved voice and footsteps of wife and mother are heard no more, but their hearts doubtless rejoice in the hope that her happy spirit, with angelic patience, waits to greet them in eternal union and everlasting bliss. J.H. Allen.
