John Clarence Dougherty, the son of John and Susan Hughes Dougherty, was born west of Benson, Nebraska March 29,1906. He died at the Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska Thursday, September 29, 1983 at the age of seventy-seven years and six months.
John grew to manhood in the Benson area. He was united in marriage with Mildred Anna Chambers December 28, 1927 at Omaha.
Mr. Dougherty was an energetic person and lived and worked, farming through the depression. He was later able to buy his own farm near Tekamah, Nebraska where he lived until moving to Lenox, Iowa seven years ago.
He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Although he had been confined to a wheelchair for five years, he was always happy to have relatives stop to visit. He will be missed by those who knew him.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister, Helen Bucker; and a brother, James Dougherty.
Survivors include his wife Mildred of Lenox; three sons, Duane and wife, Rosemary, Richard and wife, Annette, all of Lenox, and Glen of Austin, Texas; thirteen grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; as well as other relatives.
Services were held Monday, October 3 at 1:30 p.m. at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home in Lenox. Reverend Les Hesseltine, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiated.
Music was provided by Norma Paymal, organist, and Marilyn Rychnovsky, vocalist. The selections were "How Great Thou Art" and "The Lord's Prayer".
Casket bearers were Duane Dougherty, Mark Dougherty, John Dougherty, Wade Dougherty, Kevin Wickey, Marty Dolphins, and Brent Schrader.
Interment was in the North Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.
