By 1853, her mother Maria had remarried Rodolphus Fuller, a veterinary surgeon. The couple had three more children in Ontario (Herbert, Jemima and Rodolphus Jr) before moving to Yorkville, Racine Co., Wisconsin. The entire family--including Maria and her sister Emeline--lived there for a time before Rodolphus relocated them all again, to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where many of the family remained.

In November of the following year she was a witness at her younger sister Emeline's marriage to William Fuller (Rodolphus' son by his first wife, Jemima Morden) in Quebec, where William was working for McGill University's medical dept.
