Jane was born near St. Thomas, Ontario to Thomas McCabe,an Irish immigrant, and Frances Ann Royal. After her mother died at age 38 giving birth, her alcoholic father gave the children away to relatives and neighbors. The youngest 2children were unaware of their true parentage until meeting their older siblings in school.

All 5 of the McCabe sisters moved to the United States. Jane immigrated in 1886, eventually settling in Chicago. Her sister Kate joined her there in 1901. They shared rooms on Erie and then State Street. near downtown and supported themselves as seamstresses. Their Iowa born nephew, Rev. Guy Fansher , who had taken a job as an assistant pastor at St James Methodist Episcopal Church, was a frequent visitor to what Guy called "The Aunt Hill".

After the death of her sister Elizabeth's husband, Jane moved to Long beach to be near her and another sister, Selena. She packed her Havilland porcelain china in a straw filled barrel but only one large bowl survived. She worked as an independent dressmaker and became a US citizen, registering as a Democrat.
