John Vance Gentry, Sr. Obt. COOKEVILLE Funeral services for John Vance Gentry Sr., 83, of Cookeville, will be held Thursday, April 11, at 2 p.m. in the Baxter Chapel of HooperHuddleston and Horner Funeral Home with burial in Maxwell Cemetery North with full military honors. The family will receive friends at the Baxter Chapel today from 59 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mr. Gentry died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. He was born August 13, 1918, in Putnam County to the late Monroe and Ollie Frances Burgess Gentry.
Mr. Gentry served as a Staff Sergeant in the Army with the 182nd Infantry during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of the VFW and the 12th Armored Division Association. He was a retired feed salesman with Moorman Feed Sales, a farmer and a member of the Woodmen of the World and Stevens Street Baptist Church. .
His family includes his wife, Mary LeQuire Abel Gentry, whom he married on September 1, 1989; children and spouses, Carol Hall and Jim Gatton of Cookeville, Una E. and Doyle Lafever of Baxter, Pearl Marie and Eddie Hargis of Crossville, Gordon A. Hall Jr. of Denver, Col., John V. Jr. and Eulah Gentry of Cookeville; Mary's children and spouses, Ray Abel, June and Don Wofford, and Betty and Glen Lowe, all of Cookeville, and Jane and Ray Crawhorn of Kingston; nine grandchildren; and 10 greatgrandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lillian Mae "Pat" Bailey Gentry, whom he married on April 11, 1946, and who died on August 27, 1988, after 42 years of marriage; two sisters, Una Gentry and Alma Lee Neville; and five brothers, Dow, Gray, Harding, Calvin and Claude Gentry.
Bro. Jimmy Arms will officiate at the services.
