Mrs. Mary Powers Hicks, widow of Col. John Hicks, passed away early today at her home at 301 Algoma boulevard. She had been in failing health for several months, the end coming at 4 o'clock this morning.


The youngest daughter of the late Josiah B. and Agnes Tanner Powers, she was born in this city and resided here most of her life. Her father was city clerk of Oshkosh for 18 years. Upon his death in 1900, Miss Powers entered the teaching profession serving as an instructor successively at the Merrill, Lincoln and Franklin schools. She continued as a teacher until shortly before her marriage Oct. 11, 1913 to the late Colonel Hicks, owner and publisher of the Oshkosh Daily Northwestern.


Her marriage to Colonel Hicks was a highlight of the social season of 1913 and attracted state- wide attention Colonel Hicks was a national figure having served as U S minister to Peru as well as a U.S. minister to Chile. Following their marriage the couple traveled extensively in Europe and spent the winters in Texas. Florida and California. Colonel Hicks died in Antonio Dec. 20, 1917.


Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Hicks resided temporarily in the south but always regarded Oshkosh as her home and soon returned here to live the remainder of her life.


For a number of years Mrs. Hicks carried on the philanthropic work begun by her husband. She took a special interest in the art treasures he gave and planned for this community.


Up until her health failed, she was active in the affairs of Trinity Episcopal church, serving the Sunday school of that church for many years as an instructor. She was also a member of St. Agnes guild of the church.


During World war I Mrs. Hicks was prominent in Red Cross activities and aided in similar work in the present conflict until her failing health prohibited such activity.


Mrs. Hicks is survived by one sister. Miss Nellie Powers, with whom she resided.


Funeral services will be held in private Thursday evening at the Mallery & Arhelger funeral home. The service, set for 7:30 o'clock, will be conducted by the Rev. William R. Otto, rector of Trinity Episcopal church. Burial will be at Riverside cemetery.
