Oregon pioneers were well represented at the funeral services Thursday of William M. Simpson, a native of the Waldo Hills section of Marion county, who died Tuesday at his residence, No. 609 East Stark street, at the age of 71.

In Portland's early days Simpson was prominently identified with the real estate business, and was one of the first operators to start development of the land between the rivers.

He was formerly associated with William Killingsworth, his brother-in-law, in the sale of residential lots in the Peninsula district. Later he sold his interest and moved to Spokane where he purchased a hotel. Subsequently he returned to Portland, where he remained until his death.

He had taken an active part in promotion of mines in Oregon and been connected with various newspaper of this city. He was one of the early justices of the peace on the east side of the river before the municipal merger.

His immediate survivors are his widow, Mary Dickinson Simpson; Harold Simpson, a son, McCloud, Cal.; William Simpson, grandson, and Lucile Springer, Portland. He was a brother of the poet, Sam L. Simpson.
