John Culler

Memorial service for John R. Culler, 89, was Friday at Central Lutheran Church.

Mr. Culler, who was born in Lucas, Ohio, died Tuesday.

He received a bachelor's degree from Wittenberg College in Springfield, Ohio. In 1938 he received bachelor's degrees in architecture and mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

In 1945 he moved to Spokane. He worked as an architect for G.A. Pehrson and Associates and for Whitehouse and Price. In 1950 he established Culler and Gale, which later became Culler, Gale, Martell and Ericson. He retired in 1983.

Mr. Culler was a member of Central Lutheran Church. He was a past president of the Spokane Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the Spokane Central Lions Club, the Knife and Fork Club, the University Club of Spokane, Volunteers of America Advisory Board and the Riverview Retirement Community Board of Directors. He was also a past trustee of the Spokane Chamber of Commerce, and past chairman of the Spokane Planning Commission.

His wife of 50 years, Miriam, died in 1993.

Survivors include four daughters, MaryAnn Gibson of Everett, Debby Keith and Christine Brooks, both of Spokane, and Susan Scheelke of Logan, Utah; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Spokane Central Lions Club, Central Lutheran Church or Riverview Retirement Community Eden Fund.
