Rachel Nelson Nutter, eldest daughter of Paul Ernest and Martha Eunice Ensign Nelson. joined her beloved parents, brothers Paul Ensign Nelson, Woodrow Ensign Nelson, Rene Ensign Nelson and Ellwood Ensign Nelson; sisters Charlotte N. Richardson and Annette N. Brown; and her husband, John William Nutter, on April 29, 2013.
Rachel was born in her grandfather Nelson's home in Crescent, Utah on October 18, 1921, the first daughter and fourth child in a family of five sons and four daughters. She graduated from South High School in 1939, then attended Brigham Young University for 4 years, Iowa State University at Ames, Iowa for 4 years, Utah State University for 3 ½ years and the University of Utah for 1 year. Rachel met John William Nutter in a German class at BYU and they were married December 21, 1951 in the Salt Lake Temple. The family moved to Ames, Iowa where Rachel completed work on her MS degree, graduating in 1966. Madison, Wisconsin was home for the Nutter family where Rachel worked for the University of Wisconsin as a dietitian, food service manager for 7 ½ years and then transferred to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction as a Food Service Nutrition Education Consultant and Supervisor until her retirement in 1986. Both went to China in 1988 where they taught English to university students and graduate students for three years in Xian, China and then two years in Shanghai, China.
Rachel and John returned to Madison after the Xian years and sold their home there before returning to Shanghai to teach. Rachel returned to Utah June, 1993 She lived at the Seville Retirement Center for about 1 ½ years, then transferred to Cove Point Retirement Community where she lived until her death.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 3, 2013, 2:00 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road where a viewing will be held Friday, 1:00 p.m. Interment at the Crescent Cemetery, Sandy, Utah. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to .
