Dorothy A. Bemis, 89, of Terre Haute, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015. She was born Jan. 28, 1926, in Terre Haute, to Heman "Smith" Grindle and Thelma Grindle. She married Quentin Bemis on Nov. 16, 1943. Dorothy loved her family and was a devoted mother and grandmother.
In her early years, Dorothy was employed at Herm Ermisch Cleaners for several years and then became a stay-at-home wife and mother in 1960. She also cleaned house for and was friends with Audrey and Jack Lohman for several years. She also was a formerly active member of the Eighth Avenue Baptist Church.
Dorothy is survivied by her son, Randy and wife Linda; two grandsons, Patrick and Jordon; four sisters, Juanita, Wilma, Minnie, Donna; one brother, Estel; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; and a very dear friend, Katherine McNeely of Terre Haute.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 42 years, Quentin Bemis; her father Heman "Smith" Grindle; her mother, Thelma Hammond Grindle Kirby; stepfather Clifford Kirby; two brothers, Edward Grindle and Alva Grindle; and three sisters, Imogene Price, Devella Rowley and Sharon Lemrick.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Heart to Heart Hospice and Dr. Antwan Mardini for the kindness and compassion given to Dorothy in her final days.
Visitation is 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, at Mattox-Wood Funeral Home. Services are 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, at the funeral home. Dorothy will be laid to rest in Roselawn Memorial Park.
