Joseph Michael Naughton, 78, died Oct. 1, 2004, of an apparent heart attack. Born in Indianapolis, Ind., on July 30, 1926, he was a graduate of Notre Dame University Class of 1951 and was a naval veteran who saw action in the South Pacific during World War II. He was retired and moved to the Winston-Salem area eight years ago. Joe was a parishioner of St. Leo's Catholic Church and served two terms as president of their Golden Club. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary; his daughters, Barbara Naughton, Catherine Naughton and daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and David Rooney; a son, Joseph Michael Naughton III,; and two grandchildren, Michael and Caroline Rooney. Also surviving are a brother, William D. Naughton of Bethany Beach, Del., and a sister, Marie Johnson of Southampton, N.Y. Joe was an avid Fighting Irish fan, had a strong passion for golf and was an overall sports enthusiast. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, at Saint Leo's Catholic Church.
