From the book, "A History of Deerfield, Massachusetts,":

"John, son of William (2), b. 1673; lived at Wapping; selectman, assessor, etc; in the Meadow fight, ...; in 1743, his son, John, presented the General Court a petition with the following certificate, and 200 acres of land were granted him for his father's service: "I was in the Deerfield Meadow fight & see the said Smead kill an Indian. Some of the soldiers took off the Indian's scalp & secured it & I see the said John Smeadd shoot at another Indian, which he gave a mortal wound, and the Indian died in a short time at the place where he received the wound, or very near the place. Ebenezer Warner.

"In spite of his wound, this brave fighter brought in his gun and all his equipment. He died April 30, 1720. He married November 22, 1699, Anna, daughter of Daniel Weld; she died October 31, 1712; (2) December 31, 1714, Abigail, daughter of James Brown; she was of Enfield, 1749." 2

*****
Captors and Captives - The 1704 French and Indian Raid on Deerfield" by Evan Haefeli and Kevin Sweeney Page 120

"...The reinforced militiamen eventually drove out the remaining raiders. As the English militiamen pushed forward, the raiders fled, dropping their plunder as they ran...They threw off hats, coats, jackets and accoutrements in an effort to close the gap between themselves and the last of the fleeing attackers. One of the pursuers, A Deerfield resident named John Smead, killed one Native, who was promptly scalped. He then wounded another. As a contemporary author admitted, such markmanship was ' a rare thing amongst us.' But without snowshoes, the English foundered in the deep snow, became separated, and stood exposed in the open meadows..."
