Dr. Clayton Joseph Arceneaux was born on November 21, 1936 in Liberty, Texas, to Antoine Arceneaux and Agnes Mallet Arceneaux.
He earned his B.S. degree in Secondary Education from Grambling State University in 1959 where he majored in Speech and Drama and minored in English. While there, he became a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He was an active member of Eta Gamma Lambda Chapter and a Life Member of his fraternity until his death. After undergrad, he served two years in the United States Army where he worked as a teacher for the Army Education Center and was honorably discharged in 1966. He began his teaching career at Paul Breaux High School. In 1965 he continued his education and graduated from Southern University in 1967 with his master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling. He accepted a position at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1972 as an instructor. In 1975, he earned his Doctorate of Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
During his tenure at the University of Southwestern Louisiana he was named Distinguished Professor in the Educational Foundations of Leadership Department in 1981, served as the Department Head for the Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership and Coordinator of Guidance and Counseling. After his retirement from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1999 he continued to work as an adjunct professor at his alma mater, Southern University and the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.
Dr. Arceneaux was a member of the International Alliance for Invitational Education, American Association of Counseling and Development, Association of Teacher Educators, Phi Delta Kappa, Louisiana Counseling Association, Research Association of Minority Professors, LouisianaAssociation of African Americans in Higher Education and Bayou Vermillion District.
He was an active parishioner of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church where he was a Lector and Eucharistic Minister.
Dr. Arceneaux will be remembered for his wisdom, lively storytelling, love of learning, teaching and mentoring young aspiring teachers and counselors. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed his travels to Canada, England, Israel and Switzerland. He will be missed by his family, especially his granddaughters who he loved and nurtured.
He leaves to cherish fond memories his wife of 52 years, Gladys Labbe’ Arceneaux; daughter, Angela (Jermaine) Trahan; son, Clayton Arceneaux, Jr. of Lafayette ; six grandchildren, Hailey, Lauren and Linsey Trahan, and Destiny, Katelyn and Raquel Arceneaux ; sister, Patricia (Donald) Cravins ; mother-in-law, Mabel Labbe’; aunt, Viola Mallet and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church for Dr. Clayton Arceneaux, Sr., who departed his life at his residence on September 13, 2015. Services will be conducted by Father Clifton Labbe’, SVD and Co -Celebrant Fr. Sebastian Myladiyal, SVD. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
