Peter is listed in a cemetery transcription of Zion Lutheran Cemetery. The transcription lists his data of death and age as given on his tombstone. The arithmetic computes exactly to his birth date of 11 Apr 1797 found in Goshenhoppen Church records in Montgomery Co. PA.

Alicia Hilbish Blackman, who has probably done more research on the Hilbish family than any other genealogist, says: "It is believed that Peter Hilbish was married twice, first to Catherine Weller who bore him Tilman, then died. Peter married second Catherine Bickhart who bore him John (1838), Jonathan (1840) Thomas (1842) Peter (1844) and Sarah (1848). The absolute proof of the fact of two marriages is elusive, but the theory is based on the following facts:

1. Catherine Weller is stated as the mother of Tilman in the History of Elkhart Co. IN and Catherine Bickhart is stated as the wife of Peter Hilbish in cemetery records of Zion Lutheran Cemtery, Elkhart Co. IN

2. When Peter's real estate was partitioned after his death, the deed states that Tilman had already received his land.

3. After the death of Catherine Hilbish in 1884, quit claim deeds between "the children and sole heirs-at-law of Peter and Catherine Hilbish, deceased" did not include Tilman.

4. No burial record was found for Tilman in Elkhart Co. IN explained by the fact that he sold his home in Millersburg in 1883 while residing in Coffey Co. Kansas. Tilman was still living in 1885 when the above quit claim deeds were issued as he is found buried in Coffey Co. KA in 1913."

5. Obituary in Elkhart, IN for eldest son John mentions the following relatives: wife, Katherine; son. J. Edwin; daughters, Mabel & Pearl; brothers, Jonathan, Peter and Thomas; sister, Mrs. Sarah Honseworth, and half-brother Tillman Hilbish of Strawn, Kas. [half-brother being the key phrase]
