H. E. BABCOCK, 89, FORMER ASSISTANT POSTMASTER, DIES
Served 29 Years in Office Here, Was Civil War Veteran
Henry Enos BABCOCK, for 29 years assistant postmaster of Hartford, died Monday night at the home of a friend in Stratford. Mr. BABCOCK was also a Civil War veteran and a former adjutant of the Soldiers Home at Noroton.
Mr. BABCOCK was born in Hartford, October 4, 1843, and was educated in the Hartford public schools. He enlisted in the Eighth Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, July 9, 1864, and served in the Civil War until his regiment was mustered out November 10, 1864.
In June, 1878, Mr. BABCOCK was appointed a railway mail clerk and served in that capacity until he was appointed assistant postmaster, December 16, 1891. He retired from this position August 20, 1920. He had been prominent in Masonic circles and was a past commander of Robert O. Tyler Post, Grand Army of the Republic.
Mr. BABCOCK was appointed inspector and adjutant of the Soldiers Home of Noroton, with the rank of major, in July, 1921. He retired in 1926.
He leaves one daughter, Mrs. William H. TALCOTt of 14 Vanderbilt Road, West Hartford, with whom he made his home; one grandson, Richard B. TALCOTT, and one great granddaughter, Barbara Lois TALCOTT.
The funeral will be held today at 2 p.m. at the home of his daughter, 14 Vanderbilt Road, West Hartford. Rev. Fletcher D. Parker, past of the Immanuel Congregational Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery.
