John Gresham was born in Maryland and came to Tennessee with his father when only a child. On arriving at Manhood's estate, he married Nancy Hale, a daughter of John Hale, a Marylander of Irish parentage. He is said to have been a relative of the great orator, Edward Everett Hale.
To this couple were born twelve children, six boys and six girls.
Late in life, around 1856, John Gresham moved and located in Morgan County, Missouri, where he died in 1862, at the extreme age of 98, and his body was laid to rest in Hopewell Cemetery in that county.
