Katie succumbed to lung cancer on August 18, 2015, at Pine, CO five days before her 81st birthday. She was born in St. Johns, MI on August 23, 1934 to her parents Mr and Mrs Charles Clark who with a brother, Richard, have pre-deceased her. She is survived by her husband, Dean Bates, and they were married June 5, 1957 at West Point, NY 58 years ago. She is survived by sister, Barbara Canfield who lives in Fayette, OH and a brother Robert Clark, who lives in Sacramento, CA. She had four children, all surviving; Jennifer McMahon in Connecticut, James Bates in Michigan, Stanley Bates in Colorado, and Robert Bates in Riverview, FL. She has eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Katie graduated from St John's High School and then attended Ypsilanti College where she graduated as a Special Education Teacher. Between her junior and senior year in High School, she met Dean Bates at her sister's farm in Ohio, and thus began a six-year courtship of writing love letters with a long distance relationship culminating in their marriage when Dean graduated from West Point. She was a devoted lover of Christ and to all of her family members. She was a 25 year member of Van Dyke UMC in Lutz, FL where she was a Day School Teacher, a life-long choir member, Bible study group member, and an active Intercessory Prayer partner. A Memorial Service will be held at Van Dyke Church on Friday, September 11th, at 4:00 pm followed by a dinner/reception and sharing time for everyone. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to: Living In Faith, P.O. Box 271883, Tampa, FL that will be used exclusively for water purification systems for Haiti and Cuba.
