Early afternoon on November 7, 1974, Marvin King, a band director at Jonesboro High School, and Melanie Ann Hartsfield, a 19 year old student at Clayton Junior College and a former student of Mr. King and a family babysitter, were murdered in rural Henry County, Georgia.

Their double murder has never been solved, though Jerry Banks, a resident of the county, was arrested and twice convicted of their murder, but was, after 6 years, finally released from prison after the Georgia Supreme Court ruled in favor of his having a third trial and subsequently all charges against him being finally dropped.
