James T. Johnson
June 11, 1924 - Oct. 10, 2014

"Jim was a remarkable man who will be fondly remembered by his family and friends for his strong work ethic, good sense of humor, love of travel, and generous heart."

James T. Johnson, 90, peacefully passed away on Oct. 10th, 2014 at the Touchmark facility in Vancouver, WA. He was born on June 11, 1924 in Saskatchewan, Canada and immigrated to the Northwest with his parents, Delmar and Vivian Johnson, when he was a baby. Jim was raised in Camas, WA and graduated from Camas High School. Although he did not attend college, Jim was always proud to be called a graduate of the "School of Hard Knocks".

He built two of his own homes (one in Camas and the other in Eugene) and turned totaled cars and RVs into like-new vehicles for himself and his family.

Jim had a varied career and moved around the West Coast as often as he changed jobs, residing in Camas, Eugene, Richland, and the San Francisco bay area, working as a mechanic, ambulance/tow truck owner, insurance agent, real estate developer and a contractor.

He and Betty loved to travel and visited every state in the union and 29 foreign countries. They were a friendship family to 17 foreign students at the University of Oregon in the 60s and 70s and sponsored children from South America through Children International. Their lives were enriched greatly by these relationships and their exposure to the rich diversity in cultures and ethnicities from around the world.

Following retirement, Jim and Betty traveled full time in their RV from 1992 until 2001, when they decided to return to their roots and settle down in Vancouver declaring it the best place they had encountered in all their years of travel.

Jim felt very fortunate to have four families in his life-his biological family, his church family, his international family, and his Touchmark family. He was very outgoing, and truly enjoyed the company of others, especially that of Ms. Dottie Allen, his best friend of the past few years.

"Jim never hesitated to help others in any way he could, expecting nothing in return."

Jim is survived by his daughter, Lynda Johnson (Anto Aghapekian); son, Rick Johnson (Sharon); daughter-in-law, Avril Johnson; companion, Dottie Allen; and a large extended family of 11 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Elizabeth Snoey Johnson; and son, James Russell Johnson.

The family would like to thank the staff at Touchmark as well as the wonderful Southwest Washington Hospice team for taking such loving care of Jim.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sat., Nov. 8th at 10:00 a.m. in the Touchmark Facility at 2911 SE Village Loop in Vancouver.

Memorial donations may be made in Jim's name to the Alzheimer Foundation or Children International.
