Mrs. Helen Veronica Hughes Phipps passed away suddenly on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008, at age 86. She was born on March 28, 1921, in French Lick, Ind., to John T. Hughes and Rose Ann Conlin Hughes. In 1946, she moved to Indianapolis, Ind., where she married her husband, Milo Vernon Phipps. Mrs. Phipps was employed at L.S. Ayers where she was a fashion model for over 20 years. Helen and Milo moved to Winston-Salem in 1992 to be closer to their daughter. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2007. She is also preceded in death by her four brothers, Alvin, Paul, Jim and Ray Hughes; and a sister, Bridget Kearby. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Phipps McCormick and her husband Sam L. McCormick; two granddaughters, Katie McCormick of New York, N.Y., and Courtney McCormick Salton and husband Russell A. Salton of Charlotte; a great-granddaughter, Sophia Elizabeth Salton, born Jan. 31, 2008; a sister, Ruth Fitzgerald and husband Joseph; a brother, Tom Hughes and wife Stella. She will be cherished in our hearts forever, and we thank her for showing us how to live our lives with the wind at our back. A Mass in celebration of Helen' s life will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at Saint Leo the Great Catholic Church, with the Rev. Brian Cook as celebrant. The family will receive friends after the service at the church. Inurnment will follow at Saint Leo the Great Columbarium. "May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of his hand."
