John Parkins' 1st wife, Sibbinah or Sabina Parkins, died in July 1882. In October of the same year, he would marry a Matilda (Wallingford) Arie as his 2nd wife. It is from that 1882 marriage record that one learns the names of John's parents: John W. Parkins Sr. - his father and Elizabeth Nicholas - his mother. John Jr. was 70 years of age in 1882, establishing his birth year to be 1812. John had married his 1st wife in Gallia Co, OH on Dec. 12, 1831. Both had been born in Greenbrier Co, (West) Virginia prior to their families arrival in Gallia Co, OH during the 1815 to 1818 period. Sibbinah was the daughter of Jeremiah M. Parkins & Sarah Haptonstall. John Parkins Sr. and Jeremiah Parkins were 1st cousins, their fathers, Henry Perkins Sr. & James Perkins Sr., being brothers. Thus, John Jr. and Sibbinah (husband & wife) were 2nd cousins. It is believed that John Jr. & Sibbinah had 10 children; 4 being born before departing Ohio in 1843. The 4 being Hetty b. 1833, James A. b. 1835; Lucinda b. 1840 and Margaret b. 1843. The remaining 6 children born in Knox Co., IL were: Maston b. 1845; Rachel b. 1846; David b. 1849; Sarah E. b. 1854; John W. b. 1854 and Orange b. 1859. Parkins FAG memorial creations at the Meyers Cemetery in Knox Co. reveal that several of the 10 children died as infants or lived brief lives.
Census records for James A. consistently reports that he was born in Indiana. Because John Jr. (his father) had sisters who married into the Stanley family and resided in Indiana, it is probable that the John Parkins Jr. family resided in Madison Co., IN in 1835 when James was born. A death and interment record for John W. Parkins Jr. has not been located.
