Walter Waterman, for many years a popular merchant of Sycamore and member of a well known family of pioneers of this region, passed from this life at, his home on South Main street early this Tuesday morning, Aug. 29.

Mr. Waterman had always enjoyed robust health until about ten years ago, when he suffered a stroke of paralysis, and since that time his speech had been affected and he had been an invalid, able to be out only occasionally in a wheel chair.

Walter Waterman was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Waterman and was born in a log cabin about two miles southeast of the present city of Sycamore, on November 24, 1846. He grew to manhood in Sycamore and attended the local schools. When he was a young man he began assisting his father in the grocery business, and soon thereafter became a member of the firm which was known for many years as John A. Waterman & Son. On the death of his father Mr. Waterman conducted the business alone, and then took as his partner Warren Peters, who had long been a salesman in the store, and the style of the firm was known for a number of years; until Mr. Waterman retired because of ill health, as Waterman & Peters.

On August 19, 1868, Mr. Waterman was united in marriage to Electa Dustin. She was a daughter of General Dustin, DeKalb county's most distinguished soldier in the Civil war and later United States Sub-Treasurer in Chicago. To Mr. and Mrs. Waterman were born two sons: Fred W. Waterman is General Manager of the Gary Tube company of the United States Steel Corporation and is now in charge of the erection of a $15,000,000 plant at Gary, Ind., and makes his home at Elyria, Ohio. John B. Waterman is President of the Sycamore National Bank. Mrs. Walter Waterman has also been ah invalid for several years, and unable to walk, and is compelled to spend the summers in the north for the benefit of her health, and is now at Eagle River, Wis. Mr. Waterman also leaves surviving five grandchildren.

He was a strong, verile man, whose honesty in all his relations was proverbial. His opinions were respected by a who knew him and he exerted a strong influence in the community in which he resided these many years.

The funeral services will be private and will be held at the late home this Wednesday afternoon, Rev. N. E. Spicer, pastor of the Universalist church, officiating. The remains will be interred in the family lot in Elmwood cemetery.
