My Uncle Billy was the most amazing man, and I miss him so much. I will always remember waking up in he and my Aunt Willie's huge house nestled in the woods of Americus, smelling pancakes on the stove and Uncle Billy's whistling echoing throughout the house. He could imitate *ANY* bird, and it was always a joy to hear his happy whistle. I can still hear it in my head sometimes, I swear. Everyone was "buddy," and nobody was ignored or left out. He'd do anything, even taste the kids' mudpies and crazy grass stews! A talented brick mason, Uncle Billy (or "Paw Paw" to his grandchildren) was a cook in the Army. I remember when he laid the bricks on his bar-b-que pit. Oh boy what a treat that was!
In December of 2004, Billy's son, John, passed away suddenly. Billy had what was thought to be a stroke, but we found out that he had a brain tumor instead. It was a matter of months before he was gone, dying at the home he and my Aunt built about two years before; a lake-style 'cabin' home on their Americus land, facing a pond that my Uncle made himself.
He was my absolute favorite. I'll always remember him. I can still remember the last time I saw him. I put my arms around him and said goodbye. I don't think he remembered my name, but it didn't matter, because he called me "buddy." And that was Paw Paw Billy.
