Sherman was 1 of 15 children of William Robert and Margaret Ann Reed Bennett. He joined the Navy and served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He worked as a salesman for Lewisburg Wholesale and was a school bus driver for many years. He had four children, Sherleen, Kent, Lou and Kathie and one grandchild at the time of his death.

He had a wonderful sense of humor and "never met a stranger." He was a great story teller and loved to laugh.
