Mary Josephine Kountz, the daughter of Christopher Columbus & Matheldia "Arrena" (Hutcheson) Kountz, was born in Toyahvale, Reeves Co, TX, on April 25, 1890. Her tombstone is shown with the last names of her two husbands.

In the early part of 1880, her parents & three siblings joined a wagon train led by Captain H.K. Hutchinson going to New Mexico. H. K. had formerly been a Texas Ranger. They stopped at a spring, north of what is now Balmorhea, TX, and found that this was the home they had been searching for.

Her father established the Kountz ranch in the little community of Toyahvale. A school was started in 1904 when Mary was 13 years old, & an adobe school house was built on their ranch. Her father was one of the first board members.

Mary's first marriage was to Henry Charles Meier. They had two sons, Herbert, born in 1912 & John born in 1915. On Sept. 12, 1918, they were living in Balmorhea when Henry, age 23, registered for the WWI draft. He indicated that he was self employed on their farm. His physical description was tall, stout, blue eyes, & light brown hair. He died in 1919.

Her second marriage was to William Edward Gould. They had two daughters, Catherine Arena born in 1921, and Ruth born in 1925.

William, age 41, was living in Balmorhea when he had registered for the WWI draft on Sept. 12, 1918. His nearest relative was shown as Catherine Gould. He was described as being tall, slender, with blue eyes & brown hair.

Mary died on @ 2:10 a.m., February 25, 1951, in the Memorial Hospital in Fort Stockton, Pecos Co, TX, from cancer of the abdomen. She was 60 years old.

William was 85 years old when he died on September 28, 1962, in San Angelo, Tom Green Co, TX, from a heart related condition.
