DR. BENJAMIN BERGER passed away on September 14th in Portland, Maine at the age of 97. He was born August 21st, 1917 in Cleveland, Ohio and the son of Sam and Ida Berger. He graduated from Glenville High School in 1934 and earned his B.A. '38, M.Sc. '39 and M.D. in 1942 at the Ohio State University. On June 21, 1942 he married Dorothy "Dottie" Davidson of Marvell, Arkansas, and soon after served in the Army as a physician in India during World War II. After the war, he and Dottie settled in Shaker Heights where they lived until Dorothy's passing in 2010 when Dr. Berger moved to Maine where he lived with family. Dr. Berger, a family doctor, practiced medicine until his retirement at the age of 88. On September 5th, 1972, the Bergers' oldest son David, an Olympic weightlifter, was one of the 11 Israeli athletes murdered at the Munich Olympics. During that difficult period Dr. Berger presented himself with great dignity urging peace and restraint rather than revenge. Dr. Berger served on the boards of the Jewish Community Center and Fairmount Temple.
