ELEVA - Richard I. "Dick" Nelson, 67, of Strum, died Tuesday, May 14, 1996, at his home in rural Strum, of a massive heart attack.

He was born April 8, 1929, in the town of Albion, Trempealeau County, to John and Amanda (Berg) Nelson. He was a graduate of Eleva High School.

Dick farmed on the family dairy farm in the town of Albion until his retirement in 1992.

He was a lifelong member of Eleva Lutheran Church and was presently serving as the congregation president, an office that he had held several times before. He also served in various other offices in the church. He was currently president of the Board of Eleva Lutheran Housing Inc. He sang in the church choir for many years.

At the time of his death he was filling a vacancy on the E.L.C.A. Northwest Synod Council. He was nominated to be elected to the Synod Council on May 31, 1996. Dick was one of the representatives of the Northwest Synod who visited the Sister Congregation in Brazil. He also helped plan for their return visit to Wisconsin this summer.

He served on the Tri-County Telephone Co-op Board from its organization in 1964, until his retirement in 1992. He was an avid reader and loved animals, flowers and cars.

Survivors include a brother, Norris (Audrey) Nelson of Eau Claire; four sisters, Alice (Philip) Thomte of Whitehall, Elaine (Edgar) Welge of Chester, Illinois, Esther Adams of Eleva and Florence (Romaine) Anderson of Eau Claire; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, James Nelson.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 20, at Eleva Lutheran Church, with the Reverend James Carlson officiating. Burial will be in Eleva Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Kjentvet & Smith Funeral Home in Eleva. Friends may also call from noon until time of services Monday at the church.
