Gilbert Moen
(1886-1951)

Gilbert Moen, son of Thorstein and Eli (Kvamme) Moen was born at Whitehall, Wis., on April 3, 1886 and passed away at the Gillette hospital in Mondovi, July 17, 1951.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith by Rev. Christopherson of Whitehall.
At the age of 14 he moved with his parents to a farm in Pleasant Valley. Here he graduated from grade school and then attended high school in Eleva. Later he attended the University of Wisconsin.
On June 2, 1915, he was united in marriage to Heleborg Halverson of Eleva. To this union five children were born: Evelyn (Mrs. Sherman Evans), Mondovi; Thelma (Mrs. Robert Sanford), Wausau; Gilford (deceased); John and Jean at home.
Besides his wife and children he is survived by seven grand- children; three brothers, Hans and Gust of Eleva and Rev. T.E. Moen of Kasson, Minn.; one sister, Mrs. Gina Olson of Eleva.
After his marriage they re-sided on the home farm until his health failed and in 1924 they moved to Eleva. Here he worked at the Mercantile store and for the past 14 years he has been custodian of the Eleva school.
He was a kind and loving husband and father. He was well liked and highly respected by all who knew him. This was shown by the beautiful flowers, the many memorials, and the hundreds of people who attended his funeral which was held at the Eleva Lutheran church Friday, July 20.

I cannot say, and I will not say
That he is dead-he is just away
With a cheery smile and
A wave of the hand,
He has wandered into
An unknown land
And left us dreaming
How very fair
It needs must be,
Since he lingers there.
So think of him faring on
As dear in the love of there
As the love of here;
Think of him still as the same,
I say:
He is not dead-he is just away.

CARD OF THANKS
The many acts of kindness shown us during the illness and death of our husband and father were most deeply appreciated. We want to thank Rev. Hulterstrum and Rev. Bratlie for their spiritual comfort, Aagie Wichmann and Mrs. Myhers for the musical selections, and the pallbearers, the Altar Guild, the Mothers' club, and relatives and friends for flowers, memorials and other tokens of sympathy; also Dr. Gillette and Dr. Meyer and the nurses for their wonderful care.

Eleva Diarist
Is Weatherman

ELEVA-(Special)- Gilbert Moen, Eleva school janitor, is the unofficial town weather re-corder. He has also been keeping a diary for the past five years. He reported Tuesday that 84 inches of snow had fallen in Eleva up through the Good Friday storm.
Moen has a protected area be-tween his house and garage which makes a good and true measuring point. The coldest temperature recorded during the season in Eleva was 48 below, he said.
If you happen to come within Moen's sphere of interest and you want to know the date on which such and such a thing happened to you, just ask him.
For instance, the barn was twisted off its foundation in a windstorm on one of his friend's
farms. When it came time to collect the insurance his friend couldn't remember the exact date when it happened, but all he had to do was go to Moen-he had it written down in his "Five-Year Diary".
Moen has started on his second "Five-Year Diary" now but wishes that he had taken up the hobby years ago.
