Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” August 11, 1941:

Martin Schakel, 66, of 108 North Davis street, died at his home Sunday at 4 a.m. He was the son of Leonard and Ollie Schakel and was born May 8, 1875, at Pella.

Survivors include his wife, Tonie; four daughters, Mrs. Bessie Rosenboom and Mrs. Alice Rainsbarger, both of Ottumwa, Mrs. Hannah DuBois of Hedrick and Mrs. Grace Burdick of Omaha; six sons, Albert, Peter, Ray and Frank, all of Ottumwa, Paul of Blakesburg and Leonard of Melrose; a brother, Minnekes Schakel of Pella, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Vander Sluis of Hamilton and Mrs. Nellie Goemaat of Knoxville.

Funeral services will be at Johnson’s chapel at 3 p.m. Tuesday, conducted by the Rev. A. DeGroot of Pleasantville.

Pallbearers will be Leonard Rosenboom, Irwin Goodsell, Carl Eckroat, LeMont Cassatt, Dave Van Haaften and Alfred Van Haaften.
