A Cornet in the Queen's Rangers, and a member of the Harvard class of 1778, Jones was killed in the Battle of Spencer's Ordinary, a crossroads near Williamsburg, Virginia. He was buried with full military honors in Williamsburg, but the exact location of his grave has been lost. He was the great-uncle of Henry David Thoreau.
