Robert Davis Darden, Sr., 93, of 4709 Trent River Drive, New Bern, died Wednesday at Craven Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Darden was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, The Society of the Cincinatti, New Bern Golf and Country Club, member and past President of the Dunes Club in Atlantic Beach, and he organized the first Toastmasters Club in North Carolina. He retired from Southern Railway System as a sales executive after over 40 years of service and became Administrator of the Cornelia Nixon Davis Nursing Home in Porters Neck, North Carolina. He also served as a Director of the Atlantic and East Carolina Railroad Association. Mr. Darden was a native of Wilmington, North Carolina. He graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill and attended the Harvard Graduate School of Business.
Memorial service will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church with Dr. Robert Dannals officiating.
Mr. Darden was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances Hallet Darden in 1970.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila Nelson Darden; one son, Robert D. Darden Jr. of Morehead City; one daughter, Mrs. Edgar R. Betty of Asheville; two step-sons, Albert R. Bell Jr. of New Bern and George C. Bell of Greenville, SC; five grandchildren, Robert D. Darden III of Morehead City, Thomas F. Darden II and Alison Darden Nabors, both of Raleigh, Cynthia B. Hopkins of Hickory Groves, SC, and Leigh B. Fridell of Asheville; four step-grandchildren, Catherine B. Warlick of New Bern, Albert Robert Bell III of Winston-Salem, Stephanie Burke of Charlotte, and Jennifer N. Bell of Raleigh; nine great-grandchildren, and one step-great-grandchild.
