James came to Ness County with his parents and siblings and settled on a homestead south of Ness City, near the Pawnee in 1884.
He married Mary Mellies, March 14, 1900, in Ness City, Ness, Kansas. They lived in the Rosedale district for many years. He served on the school board and attended Sunday School while the family was growing up.
At the age of 21, he joined the IOOF lodge at Ness City where he maintained his membership.
He served on the board of Franklin Township many years.
In 1924, he moved the family to the old Burdett homestead south of Ness City on the Pawnee where they resided until September of 1959, when they moved to Ness City.
Twelve children were born to this union:

2. Mrs. Howard J. (Lucy) E. Louser (buried in Ness City)
3. Mrs. Harry (Sabina) Hawkins (buried in Ness City)
4. Mrs. Clyde (Lillian Alice) Strobel (buried in Ness City)
5. Mrs. Melvin Emil (Elsie Margaret) Petersilie (buried in Ness City)
6. Mrs. Harry (Lois) Duffy, Harry Provost (died in Luling, LA
7. Mrs. Louis (Eula) Meilleurs of New Orleans, Louisiana
8. Mrs. Jack Lester (Ivy Myrtle) Owen of Union Gap, Washington

James passed away Friday, in Ness County Hospital at the age of 84 years, 4 months, 13 days.
