Laud Rolland Pitt, Jr.

A memorial service will be held at the Presbyterian Community Church, 125 Everett Rd. in Pinehurst on Friday August 28th at 2:00 P.M.

Laud was born in Washington, D.C, and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland. He obtained his B.S. degree in Forest Management from Miss. State University in 1958. He has been a resident of Seven Lakes West, West End, N.C. since May 2003. Laud is survived by his wife Anna of 46 years, his brother Roger Pitt, and three daughters and their families; Michele Stewart with husband Geoffrey; Natalie Conrad with husband Chris; and Steffanie Blake with husband Arthur. Survivors also include seven grandchildren, Brooke, Ashley, Bradley, Andrew, Rachel, Emily, and Sofia.

Laud retired from the United States Army with twenty three years of service as a commissioned officer attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He served three overseas tours in Germany and two combat tours in Vietnam. His military career also included several years stationed at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. Commissioned in the Army’s Ordnance branch, Laud served in many different units including a tour with the Special Forces. His qualifications include Airborne school, Ranger training, and Special Forces qualification. Among his decorations, he was most proud of earning the Combat Infantryman’s Badge (CIB) for his service in Vietnam.

After retiring from the Army, he and his wife settled in Northern Virginia where he worked for the next fifteen years as a defense contractor with the intelligence community located on Vint Hill Farms. While living in Virginia he also served as president of the local Home Owners Association and was in charge of the Neighborhood Watch for several years. Their time in Virginia began a lifelong love for the mountains where Laud enjoyed hiking with his family.
Upon moving to North Carolina, Laud became active in prison ministry visiting Correctional Institutions in Scotland and Hoke Counties several times each month. He enjoyed playing Christian hymns using a piano or keyboard and teaching the Word of the Gospel to the inmates in each facility.

Laud was an active volunteer providing pastoral care to patients in the local hospital at least once a week. He was also active in his church, where he led classes for the men’s group and served as Chairman of the Missions Committee. He and his wife also served many years at the Food Pantry in Aberdeen, N.C. preparing schedules and training new volunteers.

Laud loved music and passionately played the piano at holidays and family gatherings. Above all he enjoyed being with friends and family and recently celebrated his 80th birthday in Pinehurst on Sunday, August 23rd.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Chosen People Ministry or Samaritans Purse.Laud Roland Pitt Jr, was a soldier stationed in post WW II era Germany. In the 1950s he was at the right place at the right time. East German actress and political activist Ingoushka "Ingrid" Petrov had been fleeing the East German police. She jumped into the River Spree in Berlin only to be fished out by an American soldier, Lt Laud Pitt.

They were married a short time later. The couple moved to California. Over time the marriage failed and she returned to Europe and an acting career.
