Son of John and Alice Walsh of New York, he married Scheherazade Thurston on 9 Apr 1821 in Petersburg. After her death, he married Mrs. Lucy Jane (Carr) Whitehurst on 25 Dec 1856 in Petersburg. She was the widow of John A. Whitehurst (married 5 Oct 1853 in Petersburg) and sibling of Charles L. Carr and Emily B. Carr.

John and Scheherazade (Thurston) Walsh were also the parents of:

John W. Walsh, Jr., born Dec 1831 in Va., married Mary Jane Tucker on 14 Dec 1849 in Chesterfield Co., Va., served in Co. G. 41st Va. Inf., CSA, and died in Baltimore, Md. in 1914.

Edward P. Walsh, born about 1837 in Petersburg, married Eleanor Thomas Shell on 6 Sep 1866 in Petersburg, and died around 1902 in Elizabeth City, Pasquotank County, N.C. He was a Private in the Petersburg Horse Light Artillery Batt., CSA.

John and Lucy Jane (Carr) Walsh were also the parents of:
Emily Walsh, born 3 Nov 1863 in Washington, D.C., married Charles E. Lowry on 7 May 1884 in Washington D. C. She grew up in orphanages, including the Richmond Orphan Asylum and the St. Paul's Church Home in Richmond. As an adult, she supported herself by dressmaking. Lucy Jane (Carr) Walsh died in Nov 1872. Her place of burial is unknown. There is no interment record of burial at Blandford.
