Velma Donna Richards Beattie 91, of Rosendale, passed away Friday August 28, 2015 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, MO. She was born August 20, 1924, in Rolla, MO to Claude Glenn and Nellie Lois Coffman Richards. Donna married D. A. Beattie, November 7, 1938. She was a 1942 graduate of Rosendale High School.
Donna was a member of the Rosendale Christian Church and served on the Rosendale Town Council for several years. She was an astute business woman and a voracious reader.
Donna was a talented seamstress and kept her five daughters among the best dressed in Andrew County for years. She sewed a wedding gown and a multitude of wedding party dresses for both her children and grandchildren.
When that task was done, she kept herself busy knitting, crocheting, and making 1,210 baby quilts for various charities. She was also a good shepherd to the people of Rosendale with her cooking skills. A heaping plate of food would be shared with anyone lacking a holiday dinner, and a cake would appear for a child who might not have one for their birthday. Holidays at the Beattie home were always highlighted by wonderful meals complete with Grandma Beattie’s noodles and the love and laughter of 60 plus people.
Donna needed no accolades for her work. She did what she thought was the right thing to do. The family has been blessed by her example of caring for each of us and her kindness and compassion for others. Her motto was to make each day productive which kept her young beyond her years.
She and her family were blessed by her good health until she was stricken by a hemorrhagic stroke Friday, August 28, which caused her death at Mosaic Hospital in St. Joseph. She was active and independent to the end of her days.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband D. A.; sister Rowena and her husband Al Percy; and son-in-law Terry Neely.
Donna was the matriarch of a vibrant Andrew County family for three generations. She will be missed by her children Dawn and Donnie Blair, David and Karen Beattie and Shawn Beattie, Rosendale; Sharon and Larry Wall, Columbia; Candise and Mark Sheehan, St. Joseph; Deborah and Caryl Walker, Savannah; and Cynthia Neely, Country Club. She also considered Karlyn Miller, a childhood neighbor, and her son members of the family. Her 14 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren feel the void of her passing.
A Celebration of Life will be 3:00 PM Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at Breit – Hawkins Funeral Home, Savannah, MO. Public visitation will be from 1-3pm Tuesday September 1, 2015 at the funeral home. Interment will be in Savannah Cemetery, Savannah, Missouri.
