Born in Sunbury, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania on 16 October 1868, William Hemperley Oyster was the son of Sunbury native, George Oyster (1837-1920) and Ohio native Phoebe (Clements) Oyster.

Occupation: Engineer, Pennsylvania and Reading Railroad Company.

In 1870, William H. Oyster resided in Sunbury with his sister Harriet (aged 12, also known as "Ellen") and their father, who was employed as a coal merchant. They lived at the home of his father's mother and brother, Daniel, a local policeman. But William and Ellen's mother, Phoebe, was not shown on the federal census for this period.

By 1880, he was residing in Sunbury with both parents and siblings, Bertha (aged 8) and Charles (aged 3). His father supported their family on the wages of a watchman.

On 15 October 1890, William Hemperley Oyster married Maud Martz at Zion Lutheran Church in Sunbury. By 1900, the couple resided in Sunbury, where he was employed as locomotive fireman with the area's railroad system. The federal census for this period indicates that the couple had had three children by this time, but none had survived.

By 1910, William had been promoted to the position of engineer. The couple, still residing in Sunbury, remained childless. The 1930 federal census reported the same details of their life together.

LOSS, DEATH AND INTERMENT

In addition to suffering the loss of three children with his wife, Maud, William H. Oyster also endured the loss of both his wife and mother within a three-year time span. His wife widowed him on 8 April 1926 and, on 20 January 1929, his mother, Phoebe (Clement) Oyster, passed away.

Less than six months later, on 28 May 1929, William H. Oyster was involved in a collision with another automobile, and suffered a severe concussion of the brain and laceration of the scalp. He was confined to the hospital from the time of his accident until the time of his death at the Mary Packer Hospital in Sunbury, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania at 12:15 p.m. on 15 June 1929 from apoplexy and other complications of arteriosclerosis.

He was interred at the Pomfret Manor Cemetery in Sunbury on 18 June 1929. Fred R. Dornsife & Son handled his funeral arrangements.
