He was born on December 29, 1913 to Joseph and Adele Vogel. His father immigrated to the United States from Baden-Baden, Germany in the late 1800's through Galveston and established a farm in Selma where Henry was born and raised. His first commercial job was driving a gravel truck during the construction of runways at Randolph Air Force Base. He later became a steel fabricator in his own company. His companies built most of the cement plants in San Antonio.
He was a member of the Lions Club, Rotary Club and Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Henry was a gifted tenor singer and sang at numerous weddings and civic functions.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Tillie Dudek Vogel; his parents, Joseph and Adele Vogel; brother, Eddie Vogel; and sisters, Agnes Ott and Elsie Krueger.
He is survived by his son, John Henry Vogel and wife Kathy of San Antonio; grandchildren, Megan Barrett and husband Kenneth of Austin, John Henry Vogel, Jr. and wife Karen of St. Louis, MO, Adam Scott Vogel and fiancée Mickie Mendez of San Antonio, Shane Meyer of San Antonio, and Amanda Lynn Meyer of San Antonio; and great-grandchildren, Aidan Elizabeth Vogel and John Henry Vogel, III, both of St. Louis, MO.
A private family service is planned. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 8415 Wurzbach Rd., San Antonio, TX 78229.
