True Republican, 5 April 1940

Joseph Groves, 81 years old, who spent 56 years of his life in this community, died in the home of a step-daughter, Mrs. Ruth Yeager, with whom he lived the last few years of his life, death being attributed to old age.

Mr. Groves, a retired farmer, was a kindly and likeable man, whose passing is a matter of regret to the many who knew him, he having built up a large acquaintanceship during his long stay in America, his adopted country.

The son of James and Susan Groves, he was born in Lincolnshire, England, July 18, 1858. He same to America in 1884, settling almost at once near Esmond. His first wife, Mrs. Emma Groves, who came from England to marry him, died many years ago. He married Mary Ann Jinks of Esmond, who died on April 5, 1923. In August 1925, Mr. Groves married Mrs. Wesley H. Gochenour, who died October 21, 1937.

Mr. Groves retired from farming in 1910, and built a residence on the Sycamore-DeKalb road. He lived there until the death of Mrs. Groves, when he went to live with Mrs. Earl Yeager. He belonged to no lodges, but was a faithful attendant at the Sycamore Methodist church. He made a trip back to his native land many years ago.

He was the father of two sons both of whom died in infancy. His brother George, who lived in England, went down in the Lusitania disaster in April 1917, and another brother, Henry, who lived on the Sycamore-DeKalb road, died in 1934. He was the last of 10 children born to his father and mother, being the fourth from the youngest.

Surviving him are the following nieces and nephews: Lester Groves of Anaheim, Calif.; Lois Pritchett Cufley, formerly of Sycamore, now of Vancouver, B.C.; Walter Pritchett of British Columbia, and a number of others in England. Four step children also survive: Arthur B. Gochenour, Galesburg; Mrs. Jessie B. Swanlund, Rockford, and Mrs. Grace Morgan and Mrs. Ruth Yeager of Sycamore.

Funeral services will be held from the Kebil funeral home at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, the Rev. Charles H. Draper officiating, with burial in Elmwood cemetery.
