A native of Watauga County, she was the daughter of Herbert E. and Nannie Hayes Cook. She was a member of Rutherwood Baptist Church and a Sunday school teacher, She attended Appalachian State Teachers College for two years and studied violin in Washington, D. C. for a year under a private tutor. She was a housewife and former Assistant Manager and Buyer for Newton's Department Store in Boone.
Surviving are her husband, John W. Lanning, two daughters, one brother, two sisters, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services were conducted Saturday afternoon at Kelley Memorial Chapel, officiated by Reverends Glenn Huffman and Herbert McCoy. Burial followed in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.
Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Directors were in charge of the arrangements.
