According to an obituary in the 4/27/1911 JUNIATA TRIBUNE, James died in Smyrna, Delaware, while on leave from the Soldier's Home. He had been born and raised in Waynesboro PA. In his late years he had gained employment in Smyrna from W. H. Oliver, a former resident of Port Royal, Juniata Co. PA, and he was boarding in the Smyrna Hotel. He was found dead in this hotel on 4/21/1911 due to "heart trouble." He was about 68 years of age at death. He was survived by two daughters and three sons. Daughters Gertie and Millie, both married, lived in Ohio. Son James S. lived in Lewistown, Mifflin Co., son David Anderson lived in Altoona, Blair Co. PA, and son William Anderson lived in San Antonio TX.

"His military records preserved by NARA shows he was a volunteer in the company and regiment indicated on his grave marker. He was mustered in 2/16/1865 and mustered out with his Company 11/18/1865. After leaving the Army he lived in Mifflintown, Juniata Co. PA, where he married Catherine Suloff of Fermanagh Twp., Juniata Co., pastor Cambridge Graham officiating. After his wife died he continued his trade as a saddler. He continued this trade until 1909 when he entered the Soldier's Home in Marion, Indiana. An affidavit in his record dated 6/20/1898 states he remained widowed since 1890. In 1897 he filed from Mifflintown PA for an increase in his pension payments, witnessed by A.H. Fasick and Daniel Pannebaker. He claimed service in Co. I of 21st Cavalry from July 1863 to 20 February 1864, with a discharge at Chambersburg PA. He claimed also that he had enlisted in Co. L of 21st PA Cavalry on 15 Feb 1865 and was discharged at Lynchburg VA on 8 Jul 1865. In 1892 an affadavit averring his disability was filed by John Etka and I.D. Musser, both of Mifflintown PA. Notice of his death was filed from the Marion Branch of the National Military Home, Marion Indiana."
