James Webb Dunn
1924 - 2015
VETERAN

Early Life: Jim was born October 5, 1924, in Mammoth, Utah, to LeRoy Fitzgerald and Pearl Webb Dunn. "Every evening was Family Home Evening," he said, as he grew up alongside brothers, Howard and Jerry Dunn; and sister, Rosalie Johnson. Jim learned to work while growing up and attending school in Mammoth and Eureka, Utah. He served as counselor in the bishopric there, at the age of 16, where his responsibility was to light the fire in the church on Sunday mornings.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: Following high school graduation, he worked for the railroad and then began his military service as a navigator in the United States Army Air Corp, where he flew 33 bombing missions. During a leave, his cousin "set him up" with her friend, Carolee Hone, from Benjamin, Utah. Jim and Carolee's courtship consisted of overseas mail correspondence from Utah to Italy. On July 10, 1945, they were married in Provo, Utah. Jim continued his service until World War II ended. They started their family while Jim received his education at University of Utah and Brigham Young University. He received his Bachelors, Masters, and Doctors degrees at BYU. While serving as husband, teacher, principal, and Assistant Superintendent, and BYU professor (including Elementary Ed. Dept. Chair) their children were born and raised. Ronald James (Patty Prince), Darrel LeRoy (Suzanne Roberts), Patty (Randy Tew), Paul H (Lynette Cook), Kathleen D'Elia (Jamel Bolden) and Earl Fitzgerald (Shona Jensen) learned much from goodly parents. The family was sealed in the Los Angeles California Temple. Jim was an avid BYU sports supporter. Until the last little while, he did not miss a home football game and traveled to many out of state games and tournaments. He loved his associates and students at BYU. Jim has served his family, church, community, and fellowmen with integrity and generosity. His students remember him as one who listened and cared. His children, 29 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren know him as someone who gave his time, labor and money to help them with education, necessities and generous surprises. When he saw a need, he was quick to provide. He and his wife lived simply so that others could have luxuries. His service as a neighbor was exemplary. He mowed lawns, shoveled sidewalks, home taught with dedication, and even helped a neighbor learn to read. He started the Benjamin Tigers baseball team, worked for Spanish Fork Recreation hauling dirt for the ball fields and coaching young players. He served as a Bishop at BYU and helped many students with their lives and financial needs. He gave to many charitable organizations and always worried that he was not doing enough. After almost 91 years of service to others, James Webb Dunn has gone home to serve his loved ones on the other side of the veil. He passed away August 23, 2015.
Family Message: "In the words of one of the angels that was watching over him during his last few days, 'That will do!' You have certainly done enough, Dad. We will surely miss you and all you are and all you have done for us!"
