Ken Bullock
1943 - 2015
Kenneth Robert Bullock, beloved husband of Jean Bullock, passed away peacefully in Taber on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at the age of 71 years.
Relatives and friends are invited to meet with the family at Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 between 7:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. and also at the church prior to the funeral service on Thursday, August 27, 2015 between 1:00 P.M. and 1:40 P.M.
The Funeral Service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Taber Stake Center, 4709 - 50 Avenue, Taber on Thursday, August 27, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. Burial to follow at the Taber Memorial Garden.
Ken leaves behind his high school sweetheart Jean, his wife of fifty one years, as well as his children Audrey (Brian) Gavlas of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and their children CJ and Parker; Kendra (Richard) Merkl of Taber and their children Mayson, Broc and Reese. He is also survived by his mother Dolly Bullock; sisters Elaine (Doran) Wilkins of Orem, Utah, Diane (Leo) Layton of Taber and brother Garold (Margaret) Bullock of Taber; brothers-in-law Bill (Joan) Burge and Ken Christensen as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his son Curtis Bullock, father Albert Bullock, brothers-in-law Delynn Hirsche and Nels Hall; sisters-in-law Judy Christensen and Donna Hall.
Ken was born and raised on a farm and enjoyed the demands and challenges of farm life. Upon leaving the farm, he was employed with the Taber Irrigation District and also joined the Taber Fire Department as a volunteer. His pride and passion for the job led him to the position of Deputy Chief and eventually Taber’s Fire Chief for a total of twenty one years of service. Following his retirement from the town, he worked as a backhoe operator for a number of excavating companies and eventually retired from Tri-Well Oilfield Service. He continued to work seasonal for Marty Johnson hauling potatoes and kept himself busy in the winters as the neighbourhood “Snow Angel”.
In his spare time he loved stock car racing where he was a decorated and competitive driver. This passion carried over to his leisure time, spending hours watching racing and monster truck events. His pride and joy was his 1994 Ford Ranger that he entered in and won many awards in car shows all over Alberta and the US. Ken’s unique vision and creativity inspired him to build various parade toys which he also entered in car shows, most notably in the Taber Show and Shine that he helped establish.
He also enjoyed fishing and camping with friends and family and always looked forward to family reunions. Lost Lemon Camp Ground was reserved for annual family vacations. Once his girls left home, camping excursions changed to trips, with Jean, on his Honda Goldwing and tent trailer over the Logan’s Pass and Western Canada.
Ken will be remembered for his meticulous attention to detail, passion for music, unique vision and creativity, and love for his family and friends.
